
The SLA (State Liquor Authority) is adjusting the 500 ft. rule, which is the distance used by community boards to award liquor licenses for establishments in NYC. During the boom years everyone wanted to open a bar and the community boards were true gatekeepers for restaurant and bar projects. Many projects were turned away due to over saturation. Now that the economy has turned and retail spaces are sitting idol It will be interesting to see how community boards adjust their approval of projects even if they technically violate the 500 ft. rule.
