CORAZON AQUINO EX LEADER OF PHILLIPINES WHO ENDED MARCOS' REPRESSIVE REGIME, IS DEAD

NY TIMES:

In 1986 Aquino ended the repressive 20-year regime of Ferdinand Marcos and inspired nonviolent protests across the globe, including those that ended Communist rule in eastern Europe. But she struggled in office to meet high public expectations. Her land redistribution program fell short of ending economic domination by the landed elite, including her own family. Her leadership, especially in social and economic reform, was often indecisive, leaving many of her closest allies disillusioned by the end of her term.Still, the bespectacled, smiling woman in her trademark yellow dress remained beloved in the Philippines. ''She was headstrong and single-minded in one goal, and that was to remove all vestiges of an entrenched dictatorship,'' Raul C. Pangalangan, former dean of the Law School at the University of the Philippines, said in 2009. ''We all owe her in a big way.'

Marcos, elected president in 1965, declared martial law in 1972 to avoid term limits. He abolished the Congress and jailed Aquino's husband and thousands of opponents, journalists and activists without charges. Aquino became her husband's political stand-in, confidant, message carrier and spokeswoman.A military tribunal sentenced her husband to death for alleged links to communist rebels but, under pressure from U.S. President Jimmy Carter, Marcos allowed him to leave in May 1980 for heart surgery in the U.S.It was the start of a three-year exile. With her husband at Harvard University holding court with fellow exiles, academics, journalists and visitors from Manila, Aquino was the quiet homemaker, raising their five children and serving tea. Away from the hurly-burly of Philippine politics, she described the period as the best of their marriage. The halcyon days ended when her husband decided to return to regroup the opposition. While she and the children remained in Boston, he flew to Manila, where he was shot as he descended the stairs from the plane. The government blamed a suspected communist rebel, but subsequent investigations pointed to a soldier who was escorting him from the plane on Aug. 21, 1983.Aquino heard of the assassination in a phone call from a Japanese journalist. She recalled gathering the children and, as a deeply religious woman, praying for strength.

''During Ninoy's incarceration and before my presidency, I used to ask why it had always to be us to make the sacrifice,'' she said in a 2007 interview with The Philippine Star newspaper. ''And then, when Ninoy died, I would say, 'Why does it have to be me now?'

HEALTH CARE DEAL REACHED IN HOUSE

AP-
House Democrats are taking steps to limit annual price increases for insurance policies sold under a sweeping bill to extend health care to nearly all the 50 million uninsured Americans, officials told The Associated Press on Friday.

The legislation taking shape in the Energy and Commerce Committee also would permit the government to negotiate directly with pharmaceutical companies for lower prices on drugs under Medicare, the officials said.

These provisions are part of a series of trade-offs negotiated overnight as Democratic leaders struggled to push the health care bill through the committee, the third of three panels to debate the health care issue. The committee was the final obstacle on the way to the House floor and passage would give momentum to President Barack Obama's top domestic priority.

BEER DIPLOMACY

Nobody's perfect. Tempers flare at times. People overreact. The lesson here is to not be so dogmatic, stubborn, and narrow minded that no room is left for flexibility and opposing viewpoints. PELOSI: INSURANCE COMPANIES ARE THE VILLAINS

Speaker Nancy Pelosi calls the health insurance companies the real S.O.B's in the fight to get a public option passed.

"They are the villains in this. They have been part of the problem in a major way," Pelosi said of the insurance industry after her weekly press conference. "It's almost immoral, what they are doing," she said, referring to industry lobbying against a public insurance plan option. "Of course, they've been immoral all along. They are doing everything in their power to stop a public option from happening, and the public has to know about it."

OBAMA SET TO HAVE BEERS WITH GATES AND SARGEANT 6PM

Never mind whether both sides start to empathize with the other sides mindset and vantage point going into the arrest. TJ and the TUX want to know what beer they will drink. Budweiser seems the most American. A local brewery perhaps?, To put the emphasis on small business owners? Either way, expect the winner to make out like a bandit afterwards in the ad campaign world. Also expect this story to dominate the headlines later. A press statement from both sides exemplifying humility and understanding would go a long way for a President who has struggled lately with the "stupidly" reference to the cops handling of the situation as well as well as the Health care saga. He could use this saga to end in a positive way. Or just end. read article

DEAL IS REACHED WITH BLUE DOGS PAVING WAY FOR POTENTIAL HEALTH CARE VOTE IN SEPTEMBER

Conservative Democrats better knows as "Blue Dogs" are on board now. The Obama health care plan may now be "altered" or "weakened" but this deal paves the way for a september vote. One Republican Senator Charles Grassley of Iowa even claimed that the senate is now 90 percent of the way towards having coverage for 95 percent of the people. "We're on the edge, we're almost there.

Meanwhile Obama was in a Bristol, Virginia supermarket conducting a town hall Q and A on the matter. One point he emphasized was that a government plan would help companies whose health care premiums keep getting raised therefore not allowing them the capital to improve the salaries of their staff. Hopefully upon leaving the joint , Obama didn't marvel at those crazy electronic registers that scan items now, like George Bush Sr did during his presidency.

SHOCK AND AWESOME VISITS JANET NAPOLITANO AT COUNCIL ON FOREIGN RELATIONS

It was a turbulent last 24 hours for the Shock and Awesome team. Director of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano spoke today at the Council of Foreign Relations on Terrorism. The Shock and Awesome team was there, in part. All had their permission slips signed but one caught a late night bug and was vomiting uncontrollably, the other was held up in Bushwick by cops who were interviewing local residents about a crime in the area.

Nonetheless, the speech was covered and in it contained some broad strokes as to the role of the Department and the challenges that confront us in the world today. Here are the top 5 highlights from the Director's thoughts:

1-The threat of Terrorism needs a collective approach from the American people, Local and Federal authorities, and International Allies.
2-Terrorism is more networked and decentralized than 9-11 so the DHS is using new thinking (hiring a former hacker for example), and concentrating more heavily on the Cyber World.
3-The formula for success includes both the DHS multiplying its effects along with the U.S promoting a global environment inhospitable to terrorism. Napolitano used Obama's trip to Cairo as an example.
4-Borders should be the LAST line of defense, not the first.
5-Domestic surveillance requires a balance between spying and security and Immigration policy needs a review as well as a meeting with Congress as to why certain bills have not passed in the years before.

For more on Napolitano's visit, and the Shock and Awesome team's wild last 24 hours, listen to SHOCK AND AWESOME: This Friday 10am--12pm www.eastvillageradio.com

OBAMA BIRTH CERTIFICATE REAL: AGAIN

This goes out to Lou Dobbs and the rest of the pundits who made this an issue. What would Walter Cronkite have said about opening up an argument based on only a portion of the facts.

AP-HONOLULU -- State officials in Hawaii on Monday said they have once again checked and confirmed that President Barack Obama was born in Hawaii and is a natural-born American citizen, and therefore meets a key constitutional requirement for being president. They hoped to stem a recent surge in the number of inquiries about Obama's birthplace.

"I ... have seen the original vital records maintained on file by the Hawaii State Department of Health verifying Barack Hussein Obama was born in Hawaii and is a natural-born American citizen," Health Director Dr. Chiyome Fukino said in a brief statement. "I have nothing further to add to this statement or my original statement issued in October 2008 over eight months ago."

SARAH PALIN FAREWELL SPEECH TEXT

It is my honor to speak to all Alaskans – our Alaskan family – this final time as your governor, and it is always great to be in Fairbanks!

These rugged and hearty folk – some of the most patriotic people you’ll ever meet – live here. If there is one thing you are known for it your steadfast support for our military community up here. Thank you for that and a thank you to the U.S. military for protecting the greatest nation on earth. Together we stand!

Getting here can be described as the best road trip in America! Soaring through nature’s finest show you will see Denali – the Great One – soaring under the midnight sun. Alaska has so many extremes. In the wintertime the frozen road competes with the view of the ice-fogged frigid beauty. The cold, though, doesn’t it split the Cheechakos from the Sourdoughs? And in the summertime – when temperatures are 150 degrees hotter than they were just a few months ago and than they will be just a few months from now – you will see the fireweed along the frost heaves. Merciless rivers rush and carve and remind us that Mother Nature wins. The big, wild and good life teeming along that road leads north to the future. That is what we see here. What we, and the rest of America, see in the Last Frontier is hope, opportunity and country pride, and it is our men and women in uniform that secure it.

We face challenging times with some hell-bent on tearing down our nation by perpetuating pessimism and apologizing for America. They suggest that our best days were yesterdays. But how can this pessimism exist? Proof of our greatness and pride is all around us today. We produce proud and great volunteers who sacrifice everything for their country. This week alone, at the chapel at Fort Rich, I heard the last roll call and the sounding of Taps for three very brave, very young Alaskan soldiers who gave their all for all of us.

Together we stand with gratitude for the troops who protect all our cherished freedoms. This includes our First Amendment guaranteed freedom of speech – which, par for the course – I shall exercise. First, with some “straight talk,” I will address some, just some, in the media because another right that is protected is the freedom of the press. You have such important jobs reporting facts and informing the electorate and exerting power to influence. You represent what could and should be a respected and honest profession that could and should be a cornerstone of our democracy. Democracy depends on you. That is why our troops are willing to die for you. So, how about in honor of the American soldier you quit making things up. And don’t underestimating the wisdom of the American people.

And, another thing, media: Our new governor has a very nice family, so leave his kids alone!

As we swear in Sean Parnell, no one will be happier than I to witness, by God’s grace Alaskans with strength of character advancing our beloved state. Sean is that. Craig Campbell has that.

I remember that December day when we took the oath to uphold our state constitution. And it was written right here in Fairbanks by very wise pioneers. We shared the same vision for government that they ground into that document. At the time, the founders wrote:

“All political power is inherent in the people. All government originates with the people. It is founded upon their will only, and it is instituted for the good of the people as a whole.”

Their remarkably succinct words guided us in all of our efforts in serving you and putting you first. We have done our best to fulfill promises that I made on Alaska Day 2005 when I first asked for the honor of serving you.

Remember then, our state so desired and so deserved ethics reform. We promised it, and now it is the law. Ironically, it needs additional reform to stop blatant abuse from partisan operatives. And I hope lawmakers will continue that reform.

We promised you that you would finally see a fair return on your Alaskan-owned natural resources. So, we built a new oil and gas appraisal system – an equitable formula to usher in a new era of competition, transparency, and protection for Alaskans and the producers. ACES incentivizes new exploration, and it is the exploration that is our future. It opens up oil basins and ensures that the people will never be taken advantage of again.

Do not forget, Alaskans, that you are the resource owners, per our constitution. And that’s why, for instance, last year when the price of oil soared, our state coffers swelled, but you were smacked with high energy prices, so we sent you an energy rebate because it is your money, and I have always believed that you know how to spend it better than government can spend it for you.

I promised that we would protect the environment while safely and ethically developing resources. And we did. We created the petroleum oversight office and a sub-cabinet to study climate conditions.

I promised that we would govern with fiscal restraint so as not to immorally burden future generations. And we did. We slowed the rate of government growth. I vetoed hundreds of millions of dollars of excess, and with lawmakers we saved billions for the future.

I promised that we would lead a charge to forward fund education and hold schools accountable, while improving opportunities for special needs students and elevating vo-tech training. And we did. We also paid down pension related debt.

I promised that we would manage our fish and wildlife for abundance and defend the constitution in doing so. And we have. However, outside political interests just don’t seem to get it. Alaskans need to stick together on this with new leadership. Encourage the new leadership. Stiffen your spine to do what is right for Alaska when the pressure mounts because you will see anti-hunting, anti-Second Amendment “circuses” from Hollywood. And here is how they will do it: tiny, delicate and talented celebrity starlets will use Alaska as a fund raising tool for their anti-Second Amendment causes. Stand strong and remind them that patriots will protect our individual guaranteed right to bear arms. And by the way, in Alaska, we eat, therefore, we hunt.

I promised that we would seek energy solutions. And we have – with an energy plan calling for 50% of our electricity generated by renewable resources and by insisting that those who hold the leases to develop our conventional resources do so on Alaska’s terms. And now, finally, after decades of inaction and just talk, we are drilling for oil and gas at Pt. Thomson.

I also promised that we would get a natural gas pipeline underway. And we did. Since I was a little kid growing up here, we would talk about, hope for, and dream of commercializing our clean, abundant, and much needed natural gas. Our Gasline Inducement Act (AGIA) was the game changer. This is, of course, thanks to our outstanding gasline team and the state legislature, who adopted this law by a 58-1 margin. They knew – they know – that AGIA is the vehicle to drive this monumental energy project and to bring everyone to the table. This bipartisan victory came from Alaskans working together with free market, private sector principles. And now we are on the road to the largest private energy infrastructure project in history. It is for Alaska’s future. It is for America’s energy independence. And it will make us a more peaceful, prosperous and secure nation.

What I promised, we accomplished. “We” meaning state staff and conscientious Alaskans outside of the bureaucracy, such as: Tom Van Flein, Meg Stapleton, Kristan Cole, and many volunteers who stepped up to the challenge as good Alaskans. Nothing could have succeeded without my “right hand man” Kris Perry. She is the sharpest, boldest and hardest-working partner, and much success is due to Kris.

To Alaska, there is much good in store further down the road, but to reach it we must value and live the optimistic and pioneering spirit that made this state proud and free!

We can resist enslavement to big central government that crushes hope and opportunity. We must be wary of government largesse. It doesn’t come free and often accepting it takes away everything that is free. Melting into Washington’s powerful and caretaking arms will only lead to suck away the incentive to work hard and chart our own course. This will only contribute to an unstable economy and dizzying national debt, and it will make us less free.

I resisted the stimulus package, and we championed earmark reform, by slashing earmark requests by 85%, in order to break the cycle of dependency on a stifling and unsustainable federal agenda. Other states should follow this example for their, and America's, stability.

We don’t have to feel that we must beg an allowance from Washington – except to beg the allowance to be self-determined.

See, in order to be self-sufficient Alaska must be allowed to develop, to drill and build and climb to fulfill our statehood’s promise! At statehood we knew that we were responsible for ourselves, our families and our future, and 50 years later we can not start believing that government is the answer. It can’t make you happy or healthy or wealthy or wise. What can? It is the wisdom of the people and our families and our small businesses and industrious individuals. And it is God’s grace helping those who help themselves. And then this allows that very generous voluntary hand up that we are known to enthusiastically provide those who need it.

Do you remember that years ago we sported the old bumper sticker that read, “Alaska: We Don’t Give a Darn How They Do It Outside.” I remember that. It was because we would be different, and we would roll up our sleeves and diligently sow and reap. We can still do this. We can carve wealth out of the wilderness and make our living on the water – with strong hands and innovative minds, now with smarter technology. It is what our First People and our parents did, and it worked because they worked!

We must be prudent and persistent and press for the people’s right to responsibly develop God-given resources for the maximum benefit of the people.

We have come so far in just 50 years. We are no longer a frontier outpost on the periphery of the world’s greatest nation. Now, as a contributor and a securer of America, we can attain our destiny in the promise of our motto: North to the Future!

The pressing issue of our time is energy independence, because there is an inherent link between energy and security, and energy and prosperity. Alaska will lead with energy. We will prove that you can be both pro-development and pro-environment. After all, no one loves their land, clean air, water and wildlife more than an Alaskan! We will protect it!

Americans must look north to the future. For security, for energy independence, for our strategic position on the globe – Alaska is the gatekeeper of the continent.

We are here today at a “changing of the guard.” Now, knowing how much I love this state – some still choose not to hear why I made the decision to chart a new course to advance the state. It should be obvious. It is because I love Alaska this much that I feel it is my duty to avoid the unproductive, typical “politics-as-usual” lame duck session in one’s last year in office. How does that benefit you? With this decision I will be able to fight even harder for you – for what is right and for the truth. And I have never felt that you need a title to do that. So, as we all move forward together, let us vow to keep championing Alaska and to advocate for responsible development and smaller government and freedom.

When I took the oath to serve you, I promised to steadfastly and doggedly guard the interests of this great state – like that grizzly guards her cubs, as a mother naturally guards her own. I will keep that vow wherever the road may lead.

Todd and I, Track, Bristol, Tripp, Willow, Piper and Trig – we will forever be grateful for the honor of a lifetime to have served you. Our whole big, diverse, full and fun family thanks you!

I am very blessed to have had their support all along, and for Todd’s support.

I am thankful too that I have been blessed to have been raised in this Last Frontier. Thank you for our home, Mom and Dad.

In Alaska it is not an easy living, but it is a good living. It is impossible to lose your way here because wherever the road may lead us, we have that steadying Great North Star to guide us home. So let us all enjoy the ride!

God bless you and God bless Alaska!

MAYOR DALEY WEIGHS IN ON GATES CONTROVERSY

Chicago is a tough town. Lynn Sweet form the Chicago Sun Times, Obama's hometown paper got the controversy started when she brought up the Gates arrest at the Wednesday White House press conference on Health Care. Then Obama said the cops in Cambridge acted "stupidly." Today Obama offered to have both Gates and arresting officer CRowley over to the Whote House for a beer and a reconciliation. Racism is a hot button issue.
This from the Sun Times:

President Obama should have gathered the facts first before commenting on Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr.’s encounter with Cambridge, Mass. police, Mayor Daley said Saturday, wading into the controversy.

Daley said Obama — who has admitted he used a poor choice of words when he said Cambridge police acted “stupidly” by arresting Gates — should have known “you always have to have the facts” before responding to media questions.

BUSH CHENEY RELATIONSHIP REVISITED

According to a Time magazine piece, former VP and famed duck hunter Dick Cheney had gotten in the face of former President Bush over the Scooter Libby pardon. Libby was Cheney's top aide who took the fall for outing Valerie Plame as a CIA agent. Cheney was said to have leaked this info that Libby blocked from being connected to his boss.

Bush commuted Libby's 30 month sentence but left the charges and his lost reputation intact. Cheney wanted a full pardon for his friend who essentially took a bullet for him in order to help Bush push across his reasons for invading Iraq. That main reason being that Iraq had enriched uranium, thus the material needed for shit kicking bombs. Former Ambassador to Iraq Joe Wilson refuted the White House claims that Iraq possessed this after Colin Powell presented the White House's claims to the UN. It was soon after that the Plame story came out. Plame is the wife of Wilson. Pharmacies are running out of surgical masks, thermometers and others related materials as England becomes the latest country scared about the recent outbreak of Swine Flu in their own backyard. It's baaack. It never left. Just swam across the pond apparently.

OBAMA INVITES COP AND GATES TO WHITE HOUSE FOR A BEER

President Obama went further on Friday, calling officer Crowley who arrested Professor Gates that set off the racial tensions that have become a national story bigger than health, and threaten to hurt Obama's popularity. Saying his words could have been chosen better and that he didn't mean to single out the Cambridge police, Obama reiterated that racial relations are a delicate matter that he won't shy away from. Stating that Gates may have overreacted from what Crowley told him, he invited both parties to the White house for a beer. I can't help but love the humility in this case of any President being unafraid to say "I'm wrong." Being righteous yet wrong and alienating in the end serves no purpose.

Comments from Right wing radio host Rush Limbaugh that Obama's original comment that the officers acted" stupidly" was the Black Militant response was an extreme viewpoint on a comment that undoubtedly was inappropriate, unfocused, and lacked enough information on the case at the time. read article

OBAMA INVITES OFFICER AND GATES TO WHITE HOUSE

Once again showing he's not perfect and once again proving that he has more maturity in righting a wrong, the President told the officer involved in the arrest of Professor Gates in Cambridge, that he could have "calibrated his words differently." Now apologizing outright would invite that offer every time he is opposed on an issue. however given the tenderness of the race issue, Obma has been as proactive as possible in recognizing that his comments did in fact inflame matters albeit unintentionally and that he had to retract or reframe the "stupidly" comment. Not simply dismiss it or stand by it like the previous administration would have. Nobody's perfect but it takes a true leader to be able to balance the tightrope like this. Whether you like Obama or not. Now go to bed everyone it's late.

OBAMA CALLS CHOICE OF WORDS UNFORTUNATE

CBS news:
Hours after Cambridge police officers called on President Obama to apologize for comments suggesting that the department had acted "stupidly" in its handling of the arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Mr. Obama acknowledged that he "could have calibrated [his] words differently."

"To the extent that my choice of words didn't illuminate but rather contributed to more media frenzy, I think that was unfortunate," Mr. Obama said in a surprise appearance at the White House press briefing Friday afternoon. The president stopped short of an explicit apology.

TJ There will always be profiling and pre judging on this Earth. In America it will be a hot topic issue for a long time to come. We've come a long way and have a long way to go. To politicize this either by the White House, the opposing party, or the population, is not going to make the country's growth towards understanding each other any easier. let's hope this all gets put to rest and we can concentrate on issues that truly threaten the countries ability to recover from the many Wars overseas and the financial crisis. In other everyone cool down, shut up and relax. It's the summertime c'mon !

LOU DOBBS IN HOT WATER OVER BIRTHERS TOPIC

Lou Dobbs can get under your skin. That said, he has a right to bring any topic on the show he wants. He chose the "Birthers" drama last night and one group was incensed and demanded that CNN remove him. That's going too far. He left the forum open. Our gripe is that all he comes off close minded too often. Whether Obama's birth certificate is real or not seems like the wrong argument to bring up now and at the wrong time. There's been a group petitioning about it, 600,000 strong. You all shoulda brought this up last year  though but hey Lou it's ok. As we said on our show today, Obam's birth certificate is probably out drinking beers with George Bush's National guard certificate. Anyway, read article
