The Europeans went to the poles yesterday to vote for the leaders that will represent them in the European Parliament (basically the federal government of Europe). Overwhelmingly they are voting for more right wing candidates. This is an interesting phenomenon considering that in poor economic times people usually swing toward the leftist parties that guarantee larger financial safety nets. Although right wing parties in Europe do represent anti-EU and anti-immigration policies, this just proves that those in power are responsible for the events that take place on their watch. Paul Krugman made the point yesterday that if Gore would have won in 2000 we would be in a rush back towards the Republican party now instead of away even though the democrats usually offer more unemployment insurance and welfare. read here.
