E.J DIONNE WASHINGTON POST: PALIN HAS NO FUTURE IN POLITICS

I remain astonished that intelligent conservatives are still saying that Sarah Palin has a political future. As I argued in a recent post on Post Partisan, I believe her political future is over – and I think most Republicans believe that, too. I also disagree with those (Bill Kristol and Ross Douthat come to mind) who are arguing that those who predict an end to Palin’s political career are elitists. They're not elitists. They just think that potential presidents need a basic level of competence and more than a sound-bite engagement with the central issues. Those who doubt Palin’s political staying power don’t see any evidence that she has those skills, or is hugely interested in acquiring them.

But she does have a future on the speaking circuit, as an author of conservative best sellers, and on cable TV. (How about a Fox News show starring Palin and Joe the Plumber?) I think she bailed out of Alaska because she is looking forward to such endeavors. She’ll make a lot more money and be hassled much less. But a future President? No way. What are your thoughts
?-EJ DIONNE
