THE OBAMA CHENEY SHOWDOWN ON SECURITY


In what will go down as a famous showdown between former VP Dick Cheney and President Obama, both spoke today in separate locations about their views on security and the effects of the enhanced interrogation techniques used by the Bush administration. Obama said he inherited a legal and moral mess, that Gitmo helped recruit more terrorists than it detained, and that torture does not work. Cheney said these techniques may have saved hundreds of thousands of lives, that getting rid of them is reckless and arrogant. Obama says those who installed these practices will be on the wrong side of history. Wow. Gunfight at the OK Corral. All of this coming off the heels of the controversy sparked earlier in the month by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, who said the CIA lied to her about using these practices, to which the CIA responded, Pelosi knew these tactics were being used. The debate as to whether the administration should seek to look behind and prosecute those "guilty" of forge ahead in a new culture and way of practicing interrogation, continues. read article
